Emergencies: In all honesty, anything that is concerning you and you don't think it can wait until morning is an emergency. It is better to have a false alarm and not have a true emergency than to have a true emergency and not recognize it in time.
The following are almost always an emergency:
Trauma, especially involving a motor vehicle, even if the pet seems OK
Prolonged or profuse bleeding
Fainting or collapse
Seizures
Heatstroke
Abdominal bloating/swelling
Problems giving birth > 90 minutes
Repeated vomiting
Respiratory difficulty
Prolonged fever > 103
Difficulty or inability to urinate
Gums are white, blue, bright red, brown, or dark colored
Dry-heaving in a large-breed dog
Rear leg weakness/inability to walk
Eye problems
Pain
