Emergencies: In all honesty, anything that is concerning you and you don't think it can wait until morning is an emergency. It is better to have a false alarm and not have a true emergency than to have a true emergency and not recognize it in time.
The following are almost always an emergency:

Trauma, especially involving a motor vehicle, even if the pet seems OK

Prolonged or profuse bleeding

Fainting or collapse

Seizures
-
Heatstroke

Abdominal bloating/swelling

Problems giving birth > 90 minutes

Repeated vomiting
-
Respiratory difficulty
-
Prolonged fever > 103
-
Difficulty or inability to urinate

Gums are white, blue, bright red, brown, or dark colored

Dry-heaving in a large-breed dog
-
Rear leg weakness/inability to walk

Eye problems
-
Pain
